Military members preparing to transition out of the Canadian Armed Forces often face a common question: What's next?

For many, the skilled trades offer an ideal second career — combining teamwork, hands-on work, leadership opportunities, strong earning potential, and a clear path for advancement. That's where Helmets to Hardhats comes in.

On June 17, 2026, Helmets to Hardhats will be participating in the CFB Edmonton Transition Event, helping connect transitioning CAF members, Veterans, Military families, and DND employees with opportunities in Canada's unionized construction industry.

Supporting Military Members Beyond Service

Helmets to Hardhats is a national organization dedicated to helping serving and former Canadian Armed Forces members transition into rewarding careers in the skilled trades. Through partnerships with unions, employers, and apprenticeship organizations across Canada, the program helps Veterans and transitioning Military personnel explore career pathways that build upon the skills they developed during service.

Many Military occupations develop leadership, problem-solving, teamwork, safety awareness, and technical abilities that translate exceptionally well into the construction and skilled trades sectors.

Whether someone is planning a release in the coming months or has already transitioned to civilian life, the organization provides guidance and connections to help members take the next step.

Why Skilled Trades Appeal to Veterans

The construction industry continues to face skilled labour shortages across Canada, creating significant opportunities for motivated workers.

Benefits can include:

  • Paid apprenticeship opportunities

  • Competitive wages and benefits

  • Long-term career stability

  • Opportunities for advancement

  • Work that values teamwork, discipline, and reliability

  • Careers available in communities across Canada

For many Veterans, the transition into the trades offers a sense of purpose and camaraderie that feels familiar after Military service.
